Brunei is a very exotic country for some and it is living up to its name. It is one of the richest nations in the world but keeps itself very peaceful. It is a country of lush rainforests, golden mosques, gentle Bruneians, and yes, delicious food!
Gadong Night Market is situated in the Gadong district of Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Stalls begin to start selling their specialty delicacies at around 4 in the afternoon and goes on until the evening. It is best to visit it as it starts so you free away from the crowd plus to make sure you can taste everything while they're displays are still full.
Here are some of the goodies we tried! Note that 1 Brunei Dollar is equivalent to 0.75 US Dollar.
This runs every Thursday at 12 am (Manila/Perth Time) until Sunday at 11:59 pm (Manila/Perth Time)
Oh wow, I’m glad I ate a good breakfast before I looked at all that beautiful food! It all makes my mouth water anyway! I would love a market like that!
ReplyDeletethat is so true dear Sallie! That time I wish I had 5 stomachs so I can taste all of the food I see hahaha
DeleteDearest Stevenson,
ReplyDeleteThis is like being back on Java, Indonesia with its delicious foods...
Hugs,
Mariette
Thank you so much Dear Mariette! You are right! I did have some of these foods as well when I visited Bali :) I love Indonesian Food, very colorful!
DeleteWell, Balinese food varies from Javanese...
DeleteOh. I was just saying that some of the foods on the Brunei Market are those that are in Bali. Not very sure about Javanese food, haven't tried it yet.
Delete...a wonderful selection of goodies. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeletePlease have some Tom :) And thankyou so much for joining :)
DeleteOnce again, thank you for taking us on a wonderful trip to places that we might never see in person! The food looks just delicious, and I would love to try it.
ReplyDeletebe well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
It was amazing Mae :) My favorite were the little friend dumplings that have a variety of stuffings :) Thank you so much and glad you like it!
DeleteAmazing photos and good food :-D
ReplyDeleteThank you so much dear Ananka! Ananka, I sent you an email I am sooooo happy! I received your Card yesterday!
DeleteOur neighbours are from Brunei originally. I will admit it's a country I know little about. Great to see some pics...
ReplyDeleteOh! It's a beautiful ad very quiet country :) Thank you so so much dear Lydia!
DeleteBoa noite meu querido amigo. Tenho certeza que a visita a Brunei foi maravilhosa. Fiquei curioso a cerca da culinária local, totalmente diferente da brasileira.
ReplyDeleteMuito Obrigado Luiz! The food in Brunei is so good and you are right my friend, the diversity of culinary arts from different countries is something very interesting!
DeleteBrunei is not a country we hear about so I found this post very interesting. I love the colourful array of drinks that you photographed.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much dear Margaret! Even if we are neighbors from Brunei, it is not very known as well in our country as a travel destination so it was very nurturing to be there :) Oh and Margaret I remembered you yesterday when a special mail arrived that surprised me! I sent a greeting to Jacinda Arden on her daughter's birthday and she sent me a mailed response with an autograph! I was so happy!
DeleteLooks like there is something for everyone. Those drinks are very colourful and look great in the photo. Another fine time with your friends, you all look very happy and that's what life is about. I just saw a quote today that I likes=d, "think happy, stay happy". Have a wonderful day, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI love that one my friend Bill! Think Happy, Stay Happy! I very much agree to that because most of the time, it's all about the mindset and our perspectives in life :)
DeleteOpen Markets, How I miss Thee - I Gazed Upon Your Photos For Awhile Now - Almost Smell The Freshness - Can Almost Here The Atmosphere Alive And Well - Take Care Brother Man - Sending Positive Vibes
ReplyDeleteCheers
Thank you so much brother Padre! Oh you said it! All the smoke from different stalls that are getting mixed together is surprisingly pleasant and made us a lot more hungry :) Please take care as well!
DeleteThis food looks so yummy. Food is such an important part of a trip, isn't it? Brunei is a place not high on the radar in this part of US, or should I say at least with folks I know, but it sounds like it should be. Hope you are sae and well Sevenson. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteOh yes dear Erika! It is an important layer of any trip, to be able to indulge the sense of taste, especially those that have not yet been tried ever :) Sending you hugs too dear Erika!
DeleteThere's all kinds of happy here, but especially seeing you with your friends. I love that. I'm sharing two posts from my England trip in 2018, in honor of "The Crown" beginning on TV here. Both are from Kensington Palace -- a tour and a look at Diana's dresses!
ReplyDeleteDearest Jeanie, I have to see the Crown as well! A student of mine who live sin Sweden now loves it and I am planning to see it when my Grad School semester is over (Three more weeks). Thank you soooo much for sharing about Diana's dresses and Kensington's Queen Victoria displays!
DeleteDearest Stevenson! How can you do this?! It´s not even 06:30 a.m. and I´m drooling!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, would I love to be there and taste all the wonderful goodies. Or a market like that in general. Now that I read about your adventure... we certainly had no food festival this year.
Thank you for sharing, you´ve been to wonderful places indeed!
Hahaha Dearest Iris! I very much understand what you mean because it has been a week but as I respond to all your dear comments, I saw the pictures and now I am so hungry at 5:54 am HAHA I so can't wait for breakfast, thinking of frying Chorizo over my brown rice :)
DeleteThere are all kinds of delicious dishes on site, my friend Stevenson. If I compare it to the price of one meal in Brunei, there is not much difference in price with food in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteBrother Himawan I loooove Indonesian, Malay, Bruneian Food! They are so colorful and has a lot of different tastes and excitement in just one dish!
DeleteOh what a wonderful trip that must have been Stevenson - those fruit drinks look amazing, and the rive and fried chicken packages are the dish that really appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteStay safe
Blessings
Maxine
You got that right dear Maxine! The Chicken on those brown paper pyramids are my favorite! While we were there I would buy 3 and bring home the other two to our apartment :)
DeleteWe don't think of Brunei as a holiday destination, but it sounds lovely just for the array of different foods and drinks.
ReplyDeleteMy brother in law has a cousin, who is Portuguese who married someone from Brunei and lives there.
I've finally posted about Porto and the Lello bookshop that inspired the Harry Potter’s library in Hogwarts, as J.K Rowling lived in Porto teaching English in the early 1990s.
That is very true Sami, it is not really much of a holiday place, not short of beauty but because of the mobility for budget travelers like me and my friends. Good thing we met a Filipino couple who gave all of us a day tour around the city which we're very grateful for :)
DeleteDear Sami thank you for linking up Porto, it was GRAND!!! Definitely will visit it someday if I would be blessed to have the chance to choose Portugal on my next trips :)
No wonder the oceans of the world are full of plastic crap. All I see are plastic containers and straws. It is unbelievable how we continue to use this stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat is true David. It was a bit surprising for us actually when we visited and saw all the plastic at styrofoamsin the market because in the Philippines, the initiative to stop the use of those started years back before 2018, especially now that most of us have bought our own sets of reusable cutleries and straws and cups.
DeleteSuch an interesting and colorful place! I imagine that the market does not look the same now with Coronavirus. My photo shows a very old Bald Eagle-- probably 20+ years old but still going strong with his second mate over the 13 years I have been following the nest.
ReplyDeleteOh you gave a massive point that I haven't thought of Kenneth, you are right! Surely there's new protocols on how it sells food there in that market now. And surely those new protocols are doing well because Brunei has a very low case of the Corona. I am so amazed by the bald eagle and the bobcat and the birds on flight on your post last week Kenneth. I am so grateful to be able to see your shots!
DeleteI've never been to Brunei, and I'm pretty sure that this post is my first look into it by a blogger. Thanks! :) It looks really interesting.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you so much Becky and I hope I was able to share it's taste to you in a way :) Brunei is amazing and different but very comfortable I must say (except public transport I must add) :)
DeleteLovely to see all of your photographs.
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so colourful and inviting.
Stay safe and well.
All the best Jan
Thank you very much Jan! You are right, all my senses are energized while we were on that market :)
DeleteI admire that love of yours for visiting and getting to know the world, sometimes I think we're life-going and we don't move at least what we'd like.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing it.
Happy week.
Best regards
Thank you so much my friend José Antonio, that means a lot to me! And you are absolutely right, we will only enjoy more of the world if the more we move and explore it :)
DeleteIt's a bit of a culinary tourism :) Everything looks very tasty. I would love to drink this melon juice. Health itself!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! That melon juice was a tasty one! They also have the one with shreded melon on it which was so much refreshing :) than kyou so much Rodzina!
DeleteBoa tarde meu querido amigo. Parabéns pela matéria sobre São Francisco. As fotos ficaram maravilhosas.
ReplyDeleteMuito obrigado meu amigo Luiz :)
