Gadong Market - Timeless Thursdays 25

Brunei is a very exotic country for some and it is living up to its name. It is one of the richest nations in the world but keeps itself very peaceful. It is a country of lush rainforests, golden mosques, gentle Bruneians, and yes, delicious food!

Gadong Night Market is situated in the Gadong district of Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Stalls begin to start selling their specialty delicacies at around 4 in the afternoon and goes on until the evening. It is best to visit it as it starts so you free away from the crowd plus to make sure you can taste everything while they're displays are still full.

Here are some of the goodies we tried! Note that 1 Brunei Dollar is equivalent to 0.75 US Dollar.

Different deep fried dumplings and meatballs

Spicy Fried Chicken over Rice ($2 BND)

Nasi Katok - Rice, Fried Chicken, and Sambal wrapped in Banana leaf and paper ($1 BND)

Assorted Fruit Drinks ($1 BND) and a variety of Noodles ($2-3 BND)

The Gang enjoying a giant $1 Melon Juice!

    2. Oh. I was just saying that some of the foods on the Brunei Market are those that are in Bali. Not very sure about Javanese food, haven't tried it yet.

    1. Thank you very much dear Margaret! Even if we are neighbors from Brunei, it is not very known as well in our country as a travel destination so it was very nurturing to be there :) Oh and Margaret I remembered you yesterday when a special mail arrived that surprised me! I sent a greeting to Jacinda Arden on her daughter's birthday and she sent me a mailed response with an autograph! I was so happy!

Another fine time with your friends, you all look very happy and that's what life is about. I just saw a quote today that I likes=d, "think happy, stay happy". Have a wonderful day, my friend!

  11. This food looks so yummy. Food is such an important part of a trip, isn't it? Brunei is a place not high on the radar in this part of US, or should I say at least with folks I know, but it sounds like it should be. Hope you are sae and well Sevenson. Hugs-Erika

  12. There's all kinds of happy here, but especially seeing you with your friends. I love that. I'm sharing two posts from my England trip in 2018, in honor of "The Crown" beginning on TV here. Both are from Kensington Palace -- a tour and a look at Diana's dresses!

    1. Dearest Jeanie, I have to see the Crown as well! A student of mine who live sin Sweden now loves it and I am planning to see it when my Grad School semester is over (Three more weeks). Thank you soooo much for sharing about Diana's dresses and Kensington's Queen Victoria displays!

  13. Dearest Stevenson! How can you do this?! It´s not even 06:30 a.m. and I´m drooling!
Ohhhh, would I love to be there and taste all the wonderful goodies. Or a market like that in general. Now that I read about your adventure... we certainly had no food festival this year.
Thank you for sharing, you´ve been to wonderful places indeed!

  14. There are all kinds of delicious dishes on site, my friend Stevenson. If I compare it to the price of one meal in Brunei, there is not much difference in price with food in Indonesia.

  16. We don't think of Brunei as a holiday destination, but it sounds lovely just for the array of different foods and drinks.
My brother in law has a cousin, who is Portuguese who married someone from Brunei and lives there.
I've finally posted about Porto and the Lello bookshop that inspired the Harry Potter’s library in Hogwarts, as J.K Rowling lived in Porto teaching English in the early 1990s.

    1. That is very true Sami, it is not really much of a holiday place, not short of beauty but because of the mobility for budget travelers like me and my friends. Good thing we met a Filipino couple who gave all of us a day tour around the city which we're very grateful for :)

Dear Sami thank you for linking up Porto, it was GRAND!!! Definitely will visit it someday if I would be blessed to have the chance to choose Portugal on my next trips :)

  17. No wonder the oceans of the world are full of plastic crap. All I see are plastic containers and straws. It is unbelievable how we continue to use this stuff.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is true David. It was a bit surprising for us actually when we visited and saw all the plastic at styrofoamsin the market because in the Philippines, the initiative to stop the use of those started years back before 2018, especially now that most of us have bought our own sets of reusable cutleries and straws and cups.

  18. Such an interesting and colorful place! I imagine that the market does not look the same now with Coronavirus. My photo shows a very old Bald Eagle-- probably 20+ years old but still going strong with his second mate over the 13 years I have been following the nest.

    1. Oh you gave a massive point that I haven't thought of Kenneth, you are right! Surely there's new protocols on how it sells food there in that market now. And surely those new protocols are doing well because Brunei has a very low case of the Corona. I am so amazed by the bald eagle and the bobcat and the birds on flight on your post last week Kenneth. I am so grateful to be able to see your shots!
